Kære Leonberger-entusiaster,
Vi er glade for at kunne annoncere den første omfattende videnskabelige evaluering af den aktuelle sundheds undersøgelse hos Leonberger-hunde, der blev produceret i et
samarbejde mellem forskere fra USA, Holland og Schweiz. De opnåede resultater blev offentliggjort i denne uge i det berømte tidsskrift Genetics Selection Evolution. Vi vil gerne
fremhæve, at de data, vi præsenterer, er baseret på et massivt bidrag fra opdrættere og ejere, og især den fremragende stamtavle-database, der er etableret i Holland,
samt tusindvis af individuelle svar på vores globale sundhedsundersøgelse. Uden disse bidrag fra hver deltagende Leo-ejer ville et sådant arbejde ikke have været muligt!
Resultatet af undersøgelsen, der rapporterer en beskrivelse af indavlsituationen understøttet af vores massive genotypedata, giver for første gang et objektivt grundlag for
fremtidige avlsbeslutninger. Desuden åbner den rapporterede liste over kandidatvarianter vejen mod forståelsen af hidtil uforklarlige neurologisk berørte hunde i racen. Vi vil
gerne understrege, at dette arbejde kun var muligt med den ekstraordinære motivation fra Anna Letko og hendes nære bånd til Leonberger-hundene.
Genomic diversity and population structure of the Leonberger dog breed

Dear Leonberger enthusiasts,
We are delighted to announce the first comprehensive
scientific evaluation of the current diversity situation in Leonberger
dogs that was produced in a collaboration of researchers from the United States, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. The obtained results were published this week in the renowned journal
Genetics Selection Evolution. We would like to highlight that the data we present is based on a massive
contribution from breeders and owners, first the excellent pedigree database established in the Netherlands, and second thousands of individual responses to our
global health survey. Without this contribution of each
participating Leo owner, such work would have not been possible! The outcome of the study, reporting a description of the inbreeding situation supported by our massive genotyping data provides
for the first time an objective basis for future breeding decisions. Furthermore, the reported list of candidate variants opens the road towards the understanding of so far unexplained
neurologically affected dogs in the breed. Finally, yet importantly, we should emphasize that this work was only possible by the exceptional motivation of
Anna Letko and her close ties to the Leonberger dogs.
